AFM Workplace Services Information Sheet

AFM is pleased to offer a variety of services to assist businesses in addressing substance abuse issues in the workplace.

Policy Development
Our policy development process will guide you through the steps necessary to develop a successful Drug and Alcohol policy for your organization. The development process takes into account your existing policies and procedures, management structure and the corporate culture.

AFM consultants have developed a "policy development workbook" that can be utilized by organizations as a stand-alone guide or with the assistance of AFM. A Workplace Services Consultant will be happy to meet with you to discuss your unique policy requirements.

Consultations
Workplace Training Needs: We will meet with you to discuss training needs for Human Resources, Management, Team Leaders and Front Line Staff. Through consultation and identified training requirements, customized training specific to your organizational needs will be developed.

Policy Development: One-on-one assistance is available from our Workplace Services Consultants. As well, a self-directed "Policy Development Workbook" can assist you in your policy development.

Crisis Intervention: When an employee is in crisis, sometimes conferring with AFM's Workplace Consultants helps to clarify the most appropriate process. We are here to answer your questions and offer necessary resources.

Workplace Interventions: Supervisors can often recognize problems, but either lack the skills, or do not have the confidence to intervene. AFM's Workplace Interventions addresses this need through practical training programs, emphasizing skill development. The training offers a simple 4-step process for meeting with employees to directly address performance issues, resolve them, and direct employees to assistance if necessary

Awareness Sessions
Employee alcohol and drug use hurts morale, productivity and the bottom line. Some leaders don't intervene because they don't know what to do. They may question their own judgment about what they see and what they believe. These one hour awareness/information sessions are designed to raise awareness and inform employees and leaders about general issues. They can be customized to your needs. Suggested topics are:
  • Signs, Symptoms and Solutions
  • The impact of alcohol and other drug use on the work site
  • Low level impairment
  • Prevalence of use
  • What an alcohol, drug and gambling policy means to the employee
  • What is a drug testing policy
  • Health, safety, and Fit for Duty

Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) Assessments

A SAP assessment is a comprehensive alcohol and drug assessment that includes recommendations for education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.  SAP assessments can only be completed by a certified SAP counsellor as outlined by the DOT.  There is a fee charged for completing a SAP assessment.

SAP assessments are completed in accordance with the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.  These are conducted when an employee tests positive for alcohol or drug use.  SAP assessments are also completed for non-DOT companies who have an alcohol and drug policy that requires a SAP assessment following a violation of the company alcohol and drug policy.  These are typically companies whose employees perform safety sensitive responsibilities.

For further information on drug testing or SAP assessments phone 944-6395 or email: drugtesting@afm.mb.ca
